The Good Enough Mums Club

Posted on 20/11/202106/03/2022

We all need one of these clubs don’t we. A club where we refuse to judge the Mum who puts her child in front of the TV for a bit of a break. The Mum who hands the child a mobile phone to watch Peppa Pig whilst she does the weekly shop. The Mum who looks like she hasn’t washed her hair in a few days and is wearing the same clothes for the last 2 days. Because, as Mums, we need to come together, make a club – support one another, but most of all, realise that we are ALL good enough.

Messages left from Mummies telling embarrassing stories of themselves

The Good Enough Mums Club is on a mission to do just this. A musical comedy about Motherhood, made by Mummies, for Mummies, that is currently touring to get more thoughts and ideas from fellow Mummies before creating and performing the full unedited version on the main stage in around 12 to 18 months time.

Emily Beecher, the creator of the Good Enough Mums Club opens the show telling us how she was one of 20% of women in society who developed post-natal depression (and later, postnatal psychosis) and that as she began to open up about her struggles with motherhood, Emily found other women opened up too and thus came the creation of the show. A chance to share experiences of life as a modern mother; the highs and the lows and the individual challenges that we all face, to make other Mums realise that not everyone has it all together.

We are told that the play will be set around a local playgroup that is soon to be closed by the Council. Five women; Pam (Emma Williams), Esme (Belinda Wollaston), Sophie (Emma Odell), Chantel (Jade Samuels) and Michelle (Sinead Mathias-Madeiros) all have their own individual stories of Motherhood. Although from the outside looking in, you think they all have it together, they are all individually finding parts hard. As the story unfolds, they join together and find that when Mums look out for mums and stop judging, open up and share the difficulties, they can thrive and realise that they are all good enough.

The performances this evening were brilliant and the cast worked incredibly well together, bouncing off each others lines. The singing was pitch perfect and Belinda Wollastons vocals were just tremendous. The band were marvellous, especially Calie Hough on the drums. Asye Osman was superb on the bass and Amy Shackcloth who is also Musical Director, was a pleasure to listen to on the piano.

I don’t want to give too much away from this show, but expect laughter, sadness and expect that at least once (if not more) you will be saying ‘me too’.

I can’t wait to see the full performance.

But until then, I’m just off to sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Boobs, Knees and Boobs…

It’s 4 stars from us at Small House Big Trips.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ – A laugh out loud and heart clenching musical. A true rollercoaster of emotions.
