Dessineo: Learn to Paint

Posted on 25/08/201825/08/2018

Any one who knows me, knows that I absolutely love games and activities that are educational. It probably comes from my time as a teacher, but I truly believe the activities where children do not realise they are doing something that is actually educational, are the best. Learning should be fun and learning is fun if done correctly. Here are my two eagerly awaiting the opening of our latest product review.

Dessineo have a Learn to Paint range and I was really interested in it. My girls love to paint (who doesn’t?) so after looking at the brand and range, Jumbo Games Ltd (with thanks to Gifts for Little Hands) kindly sent us the Dessineo: Learn to Paint sets to try out and review.

We had them for a couple of weeks but with the weather being kind, we waited until the day where the heavens opened outside and we were ‘stuck’ inside. Who wants a boring day in the house? No one. So at 9am I ran upstairs, pulled out the boxes and had a look at which one we were going to have a go with.

I decided on the Farm Colour Paint by Number box. And as you can see, Matilda was pretty chuffed by this too.

The box comes with 4 separate images to paint, 6 numbered paint tubes (to correlate with the numbers on the pictures), 1 paintbrush and a paint palette.

The pictures are near enough A4 sized and the paint pots have more than enough paint in them for the four pictures. We had plenty of paint left over at the end of the activity, I’d estimate half a tub for each colour.

The box says that it is appropriate for ages 4 plus. I had both girls sit and complete two sheets each, Jemima (aged 2) and Matilda (aged 5) with both being able to follow instructions and enjoying themselves. Jemima actually amazed me, understanding completely what she had to do, matching up the number on the paint tub with the number on her picture.

As you can see from her picture, she isn’t keeping in the lines at the moment when painting, but this activity with the thick outlines on the picture, has really helped her to paint a picture where you can differentiate between the animals and background.

Painting by numbers combines practicing maths through number recognition with the joy and fun of painting and further developing fine motor skills.

Both girls didn’t even realise that it was a learning activity. Instead they just thought they’d had fun painting and have since asked quite a few times if I can get the other boxes to use those too.

I will update this review when we try the other packs in the set. But instead of putting money away for a rainy day, I really recommend investing in some of these ready for a day in the house.

I’m pretty sure with the help of the activities and games available to purchase from Gifts for Little Hands, Jemima is going to be more than ready for school when she gets to go to the school nursery next year.

Do check out the Gifts for Little Hands website for more educational games, including the Dessineo range as featured in this post.

Disclaimer: We were gifted the product in return for an honest review. We loved the product and will be singing its praises from the rooftops.

Oooh I wish I had had something like this when my two were little. Mind you, my tween would still really like this (she’s really into painting and crafting!) Looks like they’ve got a great range – and I love the fact that your girls just enjoyed the painting (without realising they were learning) – that’s the best form of education I think!
