Winner of more than 100 global awards and seen by over 65 million people worldwide, Wicked is a must-see, and it has arrived at Birmingham Hippodrome, where it will stay until Sunday, 7th April 2024.
No less than a 5 star show, and if I could give it more, then I would. It is Oz-olutely Amazing! Spellbinding, spectacular and sensational!
For those unfamiliar with the show, Wicked tells the incredible untold story of the Witches of Oz, based on the acclaimed novel ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire. We follow the journeys of Elphaba (Laura Pick) and Glinda (Sarah O’Connor) as they arrive at University and then become ‘Glinda the Good’ and the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’.
The show is filled with exceptional vocal performances from the lead cast, well timed choreography without a single mistake, comedic moments to get the audience giggling, epic scenic design by Eugene Lee, flamboyant and eye catching costumes by Susan Hilferty, spectacular lighting by Kenneth Posner and projection designs by Lacamoire and Stephen Oremus (the rain looked so real!) And fabulous music! It ticks all of the boxes and more.
I was most excited, however, by the exceptional vocals from Laura Pick and Sarah O’Connor.
Laura Pick delivers what can only be described as an exceptional performance as Elphaba in Wicked, truly captivating the whole audience with her powerful voice and stage presence. The way Laura portrays the misunderstood green-skinned witch is nothing short of extraordinary, as she effortlessly showcases the character’s emotional depth and complexity. With each note, Laura’s voice resonates with raw emotion (the goosebumps on your arm type), bringing Elphaba’s journey to life in a truly unforgettable way.
In her role as Glinda, Sarah O’Connor radiates with her remarkable vocal talent and acting. She portrays the bubbly and self-obsessed witch with charm and humour and really keeps the audience captivated.
With their exceptional vocals and flawless performances, these two are the true stars of the show for me! Supported with a remarkable cast, including an outstanding performance from Simeon Truby playing Doctor Dillamond and The Wizard), Carl Man in the role of Fiyero and Donna Berlin in her role of Madame Morrible.
I thoroughly recommend getting tickets to see the show. It is one, not to he missed!
