What’s On for Kids: October School Holidays

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I reckon it is better late than never. So, what is on this week? Here’s our day to day breakdown:

Starting with this evening,

Friday 26th October 2018:

Tonight, the Smallhousebigtrips household is heading over to the launch night of Dr Nerium’s Garden of Ghouls at Birmingham Botanical Gardens (keep your eyes peeled for Insta stories and a review coming). It’s open for the public from tonight too, so do jump onto the website and book tickets to come along. It’s on from tonight until Sunday 4th November 2018.

Take on the live action spooky trail through the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, or should we say The Birmingham Scare Gardens, featuring street food, performers, music and entertainment, with earlier time slots available suitable for the whole family and all ages.

Saturday 27th October 2018:

Are your children Milkshake fans? Well Birmingham Town Hall are hosting Milkshake Live twice. First showing at 12pm. Second showing at 3:30pm

Like a spooky story and live not far from Kings Heath? Why don’t you give this a try at Kings Heath Library (it is free too):

From today the big Play Barn are also starting their Halloween festivities

Sunday 28th October 2018:

Big Fish Little Fish Family Rave (with DJs Mark Arrcher and Cybergroove): 2pm at The Nightingale Club.

You will have probably read our review from the last time we went, but if you didn’t, here it is: Smallhousebigtrips review.

We all loved it, so much that we are back again and this time it is Halloween dress up. Be prepared for some cute little witches.

Monday 29th October 2018:

Want to see a bit of magic? Then this will be the event for you

Or do you have a Disney Fan? Captain Hook and TinkeBell are attending this library

Oak Park Active Living Centre have a halloween party for kiddies that looks great.

Tuesday 30th October 2018:

Have you got your pumpkins ready for tomorrow? If not, quickly head down to Essington Fruit Farm and get some picked.

You too could look as smug as Jemima 🙂

Wednesday 31st October 2018:

Fancy a fun and educational party with your 1-5 year olds? Try a Sounds Right Phonics Party. £10 per child. Sibling discount. We haven’t tried the halloween party before but we did go to the easter party also held at St James Centre in Mere Green.

There’s also some pumpkin carving Halloween fun in Tividale Park:

Just Play have a party in the soft play centre.

Thursday 1st November 2018:

All you LEGO fans will be happy as today sees the opening of BRICKLIVE. The Smallhousebigtrips family are heading along to review it on Friday but it starts from today and runs until Sunday.

Or maybe you would like to head to Birmingham Hippodrome for a theatre story session with the cast of the spellbinding children’s show, Emily Brown and the Thing?

This half term, ahead of a Christmas run at Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio (17 Dec – 6 Jan), the cast of Emily Brown and the Thing will be hosting two free interactive storytelling sessions for young children and their families on Thursday 1 November.

Beginning at 11am in the Birmingham Hippodrome foyer, young children are invited to join the cast for a free workshop where members of the cast will read and share sections from the extremely popular children’s book, Emily Brown and the Thing. The session will be followed by a host of free craft activities including the chance for children to create their own monstrous Thing. Visitors are asked to arrive on the day and head for level 3.

The cast will then head out to Waterstones Birmingham for another session, colourfully bringing the story to life amongst the bookstore’s Children’s section. The performance begins at 1pm on the Third Floorand free tickets can be booked on the Waterstones website.

Friday 2nd November 2018:

In the morning Monster Mush at Emmanuel Church.

Then at night the bonfire and firework displays start.

Come along with family and friends and enjoy a spectacular display.

  • 5pm – Doors open
  • 6:30pm – lighting the bonfire
  • 7:45pm – fireworks display

Tickets will be sold online only at a discounted rate – admission charges apply for adults are £5, children £3 and family ticket £12. Under 2s are free.

There will be a junior fair, live entertainment, licensed bar, glow lights plus hot and cold food stalls.

Or if you’re the other side of Birmingham, you could try Rowheath Pavilion and their fireworks show which looks very good.

Saturday 3rd November 2018:

Birmingham Symphony Hall will be the place to be at 11:30am today as they have live on stage, Guess How Much I Love You. The story nearly every child has a copy of in their bedrooms.

Watch Little & Big Nutbrown Hare settle down after a bedtime story and re-awaken to discover the delights and colours of each season as they compete to measure their love for each other in this timeless loveable story.

Explore this playful story of love and nature as it unfolds on stage through puppets, live music and interactive play for children 3 years and up. This family favourite is brought to life by Selladoor Family, the Producers behind James and the Giant Peach, Seussical and The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat.

Today The National Pet Show Live starts at the NEC (on Saturday AND Sunday).

The Smallhousebigtrips household will be checking out the show and writing up a review. We can’t wait.

They have a whole kids section which sounds great:

Located in the Animal Village, children of all ages can get in touch with their animal instinct and handle a variety of different animals! Enjoy book-signings, story telling and fun talks about the animals!

Noels Ark will be at the show once again and will host fascinating talks, storytelling, and booking signings. The Ark will also host the Junior Reporter, a chance for young minds to interview the Supervet, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick.

Are you a cat or a dog person? Choose your favourite and have your face painted at the Hill’s Stand.

Entertain the kids with tons of fun activities including; Snakes and Ladders, Hoopla, Hook a Fish, Search for Shells and even meet Peter Rabbit.

How much do you know about poo? Find out more about animal poo and see if you can tell the difference between chickens and alpacas!

The PDSA have so much for budding vets and animal lovers to take part in! From saving Henry, their poorly pooch in need of medical attention to colouring and first aid pet training!
