Choo Choo – all aboard for some fun and games with trains.
Yesterday I took Matilda and Jemima to Track Stars at The Scout Hut in Mere Green. Every month they run a special Saturday session aimed at children up to the age of 7.
We were amazed at how huge the main track was and the girls loved the additional smaller tracks spread around the room. They really enjoyed being able to pull the lever on the trains to turn them on and watch them race around the track. Equally, Jemima liked turning them off and pushing her train around the track too.
The girls loved the session and as an ex teacher, I know that the essential parts of a childs development comes from playing and this session was educational in a fun way. The girls could free play around the room (parents if you need a break, you could just get yourself a free hot drink and sit on the side and watch) or if you’re like me and enjoy playing too, you can get down on the floor and play games too.
The session is a great way for children to learn about turn taking, playing together and problem solving, as trains travel towards each other as different children place them on various parts of the tracks.
It is also a great way to improve hand and eye coordination.
Jemima loves using her imagination when playing and this is another example of being able to be creative and make up stories of where the trains are going to, how many carriages they may need (helping with maths too) and getting the trains to stop at various stations, go through tunnels and playing with any other toys that they could bring into the mix.
And there are plenty of other none train toys around the tracks for children to stop and play with. A pirate ship, a dolls house or two, a castle and a car garage are just a few to name.
The class had quite a few avid toddler train enthusiasts and it was nice to see so many happy faces and also some girls enjoying the trains too.
The session is on for an hour and fifteen minutes which I think is just the right amount of time and feels excellent value for money.
In with the cost is free tea and coffee for adults and squash and water for the children.
There’s also a baby section if you have little ones to accompany your older children. They could look at a variety of books and play with some baby toys. Jemima stopped in this section for a bit, having fun.
We had a great time and will definitely be coming back very soon.
Track Stars run various pre school playgroup sessions based around the wonderful world of trains.
The Scout Hut sessions run on Thursdays 10:30-11:45am, Holy Cross Church Hall in Lichfield runs on Mondays 10:30-11:45 and they also run sessions at The Little Green Frog in Lichfield, but do check on the Facebook page for when these sessions are happening.
