Toby Carvery, Norton Canes

Posted on 01/06/201906/03/2022

Have you been here? I’m pretty positive most people have tried a Toby Carvery. They’re fab aren’t they!? Masses of yummy vegetables, potatoes and meat (or the veggie option) and as much gravy and condiments as you want.

So when we were invited along to the Norton Canes branch to check out how they fare, we were very happy.

For those who know me, you’ll know I sadly lost my brother in March. This was his favourite place to come to for food with my dad when they’d have a father and son meal out together. With this in mind, it was even more special for me. I was going to a place that holds memories of him.

We pulled up onto the car park which had plenty of space to park and headed over to the main entrance. The outside was clean, tidy and fresh looking. With an outdoor seating area for those lovely summer days.

And even though the pub was huge, you didn’t get lost finding the entrance as they had a huge sign painted onto the wall, pointing you in the right direction.

We had booked a table for 12pm and were about ten minutes early. Although this was not any trouble for our waiter Callum who showed us immediately to our reserved table and handed us the menus to look through.

We all chose to have the carvery which I’ll talk about in a bit, but I wanted to highlight some of the other fantastic options on the menu that I hadn’t seen before.

The Nachos in a Yorkie for £4.99 sounded great (see below picture).

I also like the sound of the Taster Platter for £9.99. Perfect for a couple to share or even good just for yourself, if you are as greedy as me. Yum!

You help yourself to the carvery, with a very friendly chef serving up your choice of meat. There were four options last Saturday of Gammon, Turkey, Beef and Pork (five options on a Sunday, including roast lamb). You can have all of the meats if you wanted or just pick one or two choices.

Once you have chosen your meats (or veg option that you pre-order with the waiter), you are asked if you would like a Yorkshire pudding and are handed your plate to fill up on all of the fantastic vegetables, potatoes and macaroni cheese that you would like. This really is a carvery fit for a King (and Queen).

Once your plate looks like it can take no more, you walk over to the gravy and condiment section (Toby’s Finishing Touches) and if like me, fill your plate with gravy and cranberry sauce (always my favourite).

After all of this, we headed back to our table where our two portions of Pigs in Blankets (£4.99) were waiting for us. These were incredibly tasty and great value for two portions which fed the whole table.

The quality of the carvery was fantastic. It was fresh, cooked just right, tasty and moreish. All four of us absolutely loved it. And we all cleared our plates. Even the little ones who had piled their plates just as high as we had.

We all commented on how full we were, but we couldn’t resist trying out the desserts.

Toby are doing an offer at the moment where certain puddings are only £1.99 when you’ve ordered a carvery.

Hubby went for the Treacle Sponge and custard for £1.99.

I went for a chocolate and raspberry dessert which was immense. It came with coconut sorbet too. And was vegan friendly.

Matilda had a create your own sundae pudding for £2.49.

And Jemima had a crumble and custard for £1.99.

The food here was perfect. There wasn’t a single one of us who didn’t enjoy our meal or dessert. Instead we talked about coming back again soon.

Between eating our mains and pudding, the girls coloured some activity sheets that they were given when we sat down at the table.

It was great to be eating in such a child friendly environment. They even had some kids toy machines by the main entrance.

For drinks we all had something different. I had a mocktail (see below picture as Jemima stole it to try), hubby had a refillable soft drink, Jemima had a fruit shoot and Matilda had an apple juice.

We had such a lovely meal at the Toby and it was made even better with having such fantastic service.

We were kindly gifted this opportunity in return for an honest review. Our waiter however was unaware of this, which we preferred as we got the same service that is given to everyone. Callum, I hope you get to read this so that you know how fantastic we thought you were. You were attentive, friendly and gave great advice on pudding choices.

Will we come back to this carvery?

Definitely.

It’s our new favourite.

Thank you for having us.

Prices: Our total bill came to £53 which covered four main meals, a double side of Pigs in Blankets, four desserts and four drinks (with one being a refillable). Which we thought was fantastic value.

A child’s carvery buffet is £4.99 for a meat carvery, £3.99 for a veg carvery. If your little one doesn’t like a carvery they also do the traditional kids meals (£4.99) like chicken nuggets, spag bol and a chicken burger and they can still help themselves to the carvery veg and potato section.

An adult standard carvery is £8.49 or for £1.75 extra you can have a King sized portion and plate (which my husband did).

Drinks were reasonably priced. My mocktail called Strawberry Fields (strawberry, cucumber and mint fruit cordial topped with soda) was £2.25. The refillable soft drink was £2.75. And the children’s drinks were less than that.

All of our desserts came to less than £11 in total

Location: Toby Carvery, Norton Canes, Watling Street, Cannock, WS11 9ND

Here’s what the girls thought of the meal… A big thumbs up, and a squint from the sun.

If you’re looking for somewhere to take your dad or husband for Fathers Day. I’d definitely consider booking a table here.
