There could not be a better theatre for the atmospheric Woman in Black to visit after its 33-year run at the Fortune Theatre in London’s West End. The Alexandra, known for its own ghostly history, was built in 1901 by William Coutts and with its vast history, it feels like the perfect venue to experience the legendary production of Susan Hill’s chilling ghost story.
Whether you have seen this before (2nd time for me) or if it is your first time. This ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ performance is absolutely magnificent.
“Obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a Woman in Black, Arthur Kipps (Malcolm James) engages a sceptical young actor (Mark Hawkins) to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul.”
The Woman in Black is theatrical storytelling at its best. Will you sit on the edge of your seat? Too right! With the clever use of haze, sounds, and shadows, along with flashing lights at exactly the right time, it is a show for the senses, and it was great to hear the audience being scared around me with gasps and a few leaps off their chairs. It does not matter if you have seen it before, it still manages to make you jump.
You will be amazed at the amount of characters that cross the stage despite their only being a cast of *two. Two incredibly accomplished actors who owned the stage and had the audience sat, hanging on every single word. Evoking laughter, screams, and gasps.
Michael Holt (designs) and lighting (Kevin Sleep) have done a tremendous job in creating a soul-stirring setting.
Showing at The Alexandra to 10 February 2024. You can purchase tickets, starting from just £13.
And if you are a Local Hero (click for more details) you can get 25% off your tickets (Premium to band c) on Wednesday and Thursday.
Throughout the production’s run in the West End and during its many tours, the producer has been determined to keep ticket prices within the range of students and young people. This policy will continue in whatever form the play and production take in the future.
*sshh, our lips are sealed.
