Mischief Comedy have arrived at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham with their popular production, The Play That Goes Wrong. A real slapstick production with lots of silliness. It is the theatre version of Marmite, you will either love it or hate it and sadly for me, it wasn’t my cup of tea.
That said, you may wonder why I’ve given it 3 stars if it wasn’t my cup of tea and that is because although I didn’t find the show that funny (don’t get me wrong, I did laugh at points although most of my laughs came from laughing at my mums face who looked quite frankly gobsmacked). My 3 stars are because storyline/comedy aside, this show is full of talent.
The story follows an amateur dramatics group who are putting on a play, ‘Murder at Haversham Manor’. It is full of slapstick humour that had a good 60% of the audience laughing hysterically. One lady especially looked as if she may hyperventilate.
The stage design was brilliant and very well thought out. I don’t want to spoil what happens but it was cleverly created and Nigel Hook, the set designer deserves huge kudos for this.
The cast were all splendid but the star role for me had to be Annie Twilloil who played the role of stage manager. I laughed a lot when she was on the stage.
Jonathan Harris was actor/dead man/stunt man in his role of Charles Haversham and may have been the most impressive on the stage. Watch out for his stunt performances.
If you love slapstick comedy and silly humour (lots of accidents), then you will love this.
Don’t let my review put you off going. Humour is so subjective. What one person finds funny, another won’t. Go and see it and let me know what you think.
