As a fan of Cher whilst growing up (I was born in 1984 and loved listening to her music in the car on family trips out), I was absolutely over the moon when The Cher Show was created (Broadway 2018) and then announced its tour was coming to Europe including Birmingham Hippodrome (you can catch it until August 6th 2022).
Last night was the media night and the audience was full. So many excited people eager to see this new musical.
And, I can happily announce it lived up to being everything I wanted it to be and so much more. It was glitzy, fun, raw and edgy. Full of phenomenal vocals from everyone, outstanding choreography, superb lighting and was probably the most plain staging I’ve seen at a show, but we didn’t need an epic stage design, the people on the stage were what everyone was captivated watching and the lighting made it great.
The Cher Show is a jukebox style musical that tells the story of the life and career of Cher, using popular songs that she performed throughout her career including Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, I Found Someone, If I Could Turn Back Time and 32 other classics. The book is by Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), with the most superb choreography by Oti Mabuse, direction by Arlene Phillips and the costume design (which I think everyone fell in love with) from Gabriella Slade.
Whether you are the biggest fan of Cher or have never heard her songs before, you will absolutely adore this production. The three Cher’s have been cast perfectly and work wonderfully together.
Millie O Connell plays Babe, the young naive, very nervous Cher who is edgy and captivating. I had goosebumps a number of times when she sang as her voice was just phenomenal.
Danielle Steers plays Lady. The Cher years where her relationship with Sonny comes to an end and she gains the confidence to perform alone. Danielle has a tremendous vocal range and was mesmerising to watch.
And finally, the Olivier Award-nominated Debbie Kurup plays the mature Cher, the ultimate diva, Star! A perfect match for the role of Cher with her looks, mannerisms, vocals and well, everything.
If you’re looking for a show to watch at the theatre, THIS is the one.
It received a full standing ovation and had everyone singing at the end.
Cher the love and send this to a friend who might like it or tell us your favourite Cher song below. We would love to know.
