Last week Matilda decided to give One Day Theatre Minis classes a try. And I went along to review the session and see what it was all about.
Matilda is a quiet little girl and I have to admit, I was a little unsure how she would be within a theatre class but I chatted with her before we went and she was really interested in going. Her sister Jemima goes to the Tiny Dancers class with One Day Theatre and talks about it a lot with Matilda so I think Matilda was a eager to see where Jemima goes.
The class at Moorpool Hall is for ages 5 to 9 years old. It started at 4pm and ran until 5:20pm. This sounds like a long time for a childrens group, but the session flew by so quickly.
Megan who runs the class (and is the founder of One Day Theatre) is a delight to be around. Friendly, energetic and amazing with the children. Megan captivates their attention and they all eagerly listen and join in.
Children can wear whatever they want to the sessions as the class does not have a dress code.
What does the class entail?
It is a performing arts class for ages 5 years to 9 years, incorporating some of the main aspects of performing arts;
Dancing – The girls (Jemima went along too and was eager to join in) danced lots. Copying Megan and Hannah (Megan’s helper), using ribbons and doing some freestyle dancing where they had to come up with their one funny dance move for everyone to copy.
Drama – Acting is a big part of the class. Matilda enjoyed acting like an animal and the rest of the class had to guess which animal she was pretending to be. There were various parts where the children had to act. Here’s Jemimas best funny face.
And one of the other children in the class had a good funny face too.
Singing – The children love singing and not just in English. The children are learning a song in another language. How fab is that?!
The class are rehearsing for a production that they are going to perform at the end of the term to their parents and from what I saw in the one session, it is going to be amazing. I’m still in awe that in four small weeks, they have already learnt so much.
I don’t like to spoil the whole of a class by saying everything that it entails. If you knew the whole of a film would you still go and watch it?
But I think I’ve covered the main aspects of this session. It is fun, energetic, full of games and exercises.
I can see how it can build a child’s confidence, speaking skills and focus and from us at Smallhousebigtrips, Matilda and Jemima give it a huge giant thumbs up!
Well done, One Day Theatre, you’re doing a fab job.
