⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A spookily spectacular performance from a frightfully fantastic cast.
Showing at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham from 18th January until Saturday 22nd January 2022, The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy is a magnificent show that will make everyone fall in love with the theatre.
With a fabulous live orchestra playing the classic songs, an abundance of comedy and humour, tremendous singing and choreography and a cast that are all immensely talented, there is nothing in this show that I could say needs improving. It was pitch perfect.
The Addams Family: The Musical Comedy takes us to the future of The Addams Family. Wednesday Addams is no longer the young child that we are used to seeing in the films, she is now an adolescent. Not just any adolescent either, she is one in love!! With Wednesday (Kingsley Morton) wanting to introduce her new boyfriend Lucas Beineke (Ahmed Hamad) and his mum Alice (Kara Lane) and dad Mal (Sean Kingsley) to her family, they arrange a meal at The Addams Family home. But what will happen?
I was delighted to see Joanne Clifton playing the role of Morticia Addams. With Joanne’s history as a former dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, her movement on the stage is captivating and the tango between her and Gomez (Cameron Blakely) was a delight to watch. Her accent which I imagine is hard to do, remained throughout the show, demonstrating that Joanne is a true star. An actress, a singer and a dancer. I hope to see her in many more performances in the future. The chemistry between her and Gomez was effortless and natural. The two characters worked so well together. The cold and emotionless Morticia and the warm and emotional Gomez were great entertainment. The smiles across the stage and giggles just made you sit in the audience giggling with them.
Cameron Blakely has a powerful voice and it was great to hear his solo pieces such as “Two Things” which had the audience in hysterics and “What If”. It comes as no surprise looking through the programme that Blakely has performed roles such as Bamatabois in Les Miserables. This is a talented actor and singer and it is great to see him play this lead.
Uncle Fester (Scott Paige) had lots of people leap to a standing ovation at the end. A true sign of a star. His presence on stage was brilliant, he had the audience in the palm of his hand. His singing (The Moon and Me) and his dancing, his acting and comedy moments made everyone in the audience smile and fall in love.
I could sing the praises of all of the cast. The performances were superb. Breath-taking at parts and each of them should be proud of their performances. Kingsley Morton (Wednesday) Ahmed Hamad (Lucas), Sean Kingsley (Mal), Kara Lane (Alice) and Grant Mcintyre (Pugsley) especially with pitch perfect vocals, fabulous choreography and first-class acting really helped make this wonderfully written and directed show, one of my new favourites.
