A daunting task indeed, to try and tell the tale of England’s most famous writer. They said it could never be done but now the long anticipated pet project of visionary writer, director, producer, actor, dancer and intellectual colossus Kyle Williams has finally made its way to the stage.
Or at least that’s what the blurb would have you believe. If you’re aware of our friends Blowfish Theatre, you may also be aware of their wonderful political musical parodies, Boris, Boris2:Brexit Harder and Trump: The Musical. And so you may be thinking that a straight telling of the life of Shakespeare might not be quite what you’re in for if you take yourself along to see it. What you’ll get is a classic farce gone a little bit meta, with a dash of slapstick.
It would be awful of us to ruin the surprise, so consider this a spoiler-free review. Kyle is joined on stage by his Blowfish co-director Laurence Peacock and the wonderful Natasha Lancely and Polly Bycroft-Brown, all of whom have bought us to tears in their previous efforts.
We’re big fans of Blowfish Theatre here at SmallHouseBigTrips and we always look forward to them visiting Birmingham and recommend our followers check them out. It’s a very short run at the Old Joint Stock this time, finishing up on Sunday the 20th, so you may miss out. If you can’t make it, do watch out for them when they come back. They love playing Birmingham, and have visited us three times this past year, and I’m sure they’ll be back soon enough. We’ll certainly let you know.
