Iconic, Nostalgic and full of pop magic
Last night, the world premiere of Here & Now dazzled Birmingham, kicking off at The Alexandra before it heads off to the West End, followed by a UK Tour in September 2025. With Steps themselves in attendance alongside pop royalty Pete Waterman and the ever-charismatic Craig Revel Horwood, the evening had all the glitz and glamour of a true showbiz gala and I have to say, I had a few pinch-me moments to have the chance to be part of this special evening.
Directed by the supremely talented Rachel Kavanaugh, penned by Shaun Kitchener and produced by Steps themselves, ROYO and pop legend Pete Waterman. Here & Now is a heartfelt, high-energy celebration of Steps’ iconic hits. And that’s exactly what this show is – it is iconic!
Set in the quirky seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, the show combines infectious choreography (it was hard not to bop along), soaring vocals, and a surprisingly poignant story about love, friendship, and navigating life’s unexpected twists and like an episode of Hollyoaks, there’s plenty of them.
The musical’s leading characters are all ace. Rebecca Lock delivers a heartfelt and captivating performance as Caz, with spectacular vocals and a relatable personality. It’s Caz’s journey, which anchors the story. Hiba Elchikhe makes the perfect Neeta, effortlessly balancing her character’s ditzy charm with an irresistible warmth that makes her incredibly lovable. Everyone needs a friend and work colleague like Neeta. Sharlene Hector’s vocals are put simply, spectacular and her commanding presence as Vel add a layer of strength and soul to the narrative, while Blake Patrick Anderson brings charisma and depth to Robbie, making him very much an audience favourite. He definitely had a lot of cheers when he was on the stage. The four lead characters and the impressive ensemble, all bring emotional depth to a plot line packed with laughter (the laugh out loud type), drama, and betrayal.
From the toe-tapping opening number ‘5, 6, 7, 8’ to the soul-stirring and goosebumps enducing ‘Heartbeat’, the songs are cleverly woven into the story, delivering both nostalgia and fresh, theatrical flair. Steps were my era, and as a 40-year-old now, there’s something deeply nostalgic about hearing songs that once perfectly captured the emotions and experiences of my younger years. It’s amazing how music can unlock memories you thought you’d forgotten, bringing those moments vividly back to life.
For Steps fans, Here & Now is a feel-good trip down memory lane. For newcomers, it’s a warm, uplifting story filled with timeless pop songs. Whether you’re heading to see it for the music, the nostalgia, or the drama, this musical delivers it all – and then some more.
