Dates: Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th May 2018

Price: Tickets from £14 each.

On Monday 14th May, me and Jemima, picked Matilda up from school and headed to The Old Rep where we were going to be watching the brand new stage show of the BAFTA award winning Cbeebies show, Sarah and Duck.

Now this wasn’t just a treat for the girls, this was a treat for me and my husband too. We both absolutely LOVE the television show and have watched all of the episodes and series, numerous times. Matilda has always been a huge fan and would sit and full on belly laugh at the episodes when she was much younger. And more recently, Jemima has been asking to watch the episodes too.

We arrived at The Old Rep shortly after 4pm (the show started at 4:30pm). I have walked by the theatre many times but as an adult have never been inside. I think I must have as a child on a primary school trip as a bit of de-ja-vu appeared sometimes.

The theatre is beautiful. A true 1913 building with so much character and charm within the four walls. I sat admiring the stage, the ceiling and the walls for quite some time whilst waiting for the show to start. You can imagine there’s been a lot of history within the theatre. And yet from the outside, although clean and tidy and well presented, it almost blends into the row of buildings and hides away. That being said, I liked it, so put your paintbrushes away for now. No bright colours needed.

The seats were comfortable and are obviously maintained very well.

We had time for a selfie before the show started. Although I seem to have lost half of my face.

All of the staff at the theatre were welcoming, pleasant and helpful. Helping to add to our great theatre experience.

Sarah and Duck started not long after 4:30pm.

The show was fantastic. It incorporated a lot of the television show with its whimsical humour and featured all of the main characters that we have all grown to love. My favourite will always be Moon.

The story focuses on Scarf Lady having a birthday party organised by all of the wonderful Sarah and Duck characters, with a Big Top Circus Tent.

Sarah was telling jokes, the ribbon sisters were there to do their circus acts, Flamingo walked on a tightrope, John did a little dance, Duck was fired out of a cannon, the shallots did acrobatics and umbrella did some magic tricks. Moon kindly organised the fireworks at the end of the party, which I have to admit, I really enjoyed and thought it was cleverly done on the stage. Even Jemima stood up from her seat and shouted “ooh wow”.

In a lot of puppet shows, the puppeteers do not usually get involved, but a nice touch in this production, is that they do. They weren’t just puppeteers, they were part of the performance, talking and interacting with the audience members.

We all really enjoyed the show. Matilda cried at the end when it was time to wave goodbye. She had smiled, laughed, interacted with the characters and clapped her way through the show. And she didn’t want it to end. If that’s not a sign of a good show, I’m unsure what is.

Thank you for having us, we had a great time.

Disclaimer : We were invited along to the show by The Old Rep with complimentary tickets, in return for an honest review.
