Wondering where to go Pumpkin Picking?

Take a look at our list of Pumpkin Patches in and around the Midlands. Have we missed one off? Get in touch. Keep checking back too as we keep updating this post.

Looking for a Halloween Event? Check out our Halloween Event post here: https://smallhousebigtrips.co.uk/halloweenevents2023/

Lower Drayton Farm, Lower Drayton Lane, Penkridge, Staffordshire, ST19 5RE

If it is a day out that you are looking for, Lower Drayton Farm has the full experience. Enjoy a day looking around the farm, enjoy a spooktacular time in their large soft play and book tickets to the PYO pumpkin experience (the two are usually separate). Last year the girls got to pick potatoes too, which was good fun.

Canalside Farm, Mill Lane, Great Haywood, Staffordshire, ST18 0RQ

This is not just a PYO pumpkin experience but a morning or afternoon out too. Play some Halloween games and enjoy a cake in the café. You could take a walk down the canal too towards Shugborough Hall from here.

Lichfield Maize Maze, Watling Street, Lichfield,

Not only can you pick your own pumpkins here but you can get lost inside a giant maize maze. This was so much fun last year and we can’t wait to visit again this year.

Essington Farm, Bognop Road, Wolverhampton, WV11 2AZ

This is one of our favourite places to visit to PYO Pumpkins. I’ve been coming here fruit picking since I was a little girl with my grandma, so I love that I get to come back year on year with my own girls. Each year seems to get bigger and better with tractor rides and activities for children. They sometimes have professional pumpkin carving artists in too which are great to watch. They have way more patience than me, pumpkin carving!

They have some great events planned this year too including Trick or Treating, a spooky trail and a Mysterious Maize Maze. For details on these special events, check our post here.

Amerton Farm, Stowe By Chartley,
Stafford, Staffordshire, ST18 0LA.

There is no need to book (there’s no admission charge to the patch) just pay for what you pick 🎃.

All the pumpkins on the patch are grown here at the farm, so once they’re gone they’re gone. The Amerton Farm pumpkin patch is dog friendly, too (dogs just have to be kept on a lead).

For more details, keep an eye on their social media or website here.

Cattows Farm/Halloween Farm, Swepstone Rd, Heather, Coalville LE67 2RF

This is one of the largest PYO pumpkin fields/events I’ve ever been to. Expect a fair, plenty of photo opportunities, trick or treating, inflatables and so much more.

For more details, keep your eye on their website here.

Pumpkins R Us, Stoneleigh Rd, Stoneleigh, Kenilworth CV8 2LH

It doesn’t matter what the weather is like with Pumpkins R Us as it is indoors and HUGE! I’d never seen so many pumpkins all under one roof and it’s a superb name for the place as it is definitely the pumpkin version of Toys R Us with so many different varieties of pumpkins and gourds.

There’s photo opportunities, a shop and lots of fun to be had.

For more details of dates and tickets, keep checking back to their website here.

Apley Farm, Norton, Shifnal, Shropshire, TF11 9EF

“The Scarecrows have arrived at Apley Farm Shop! Head to our storytelling tent where a spellbinding, spooktacular story will be read to you and your children, then follow a self-led trail to find our Apley Scarecrows….. can you find the mischievous one, the spooky one, the witchy one, and many more?

Before you head home, don’t forget to choose your free, BOO-tiful pumpkin from our pumpkin patch, enjoy our Apley refreshments, and head towards the cackle of laughter from our small childrens funfair*!

A Decent Exposure, our event Photographer, will once again be joining us for this event, and a childrens funfair will also be on site! Please note – these aspects are payable separately on the day

The family-friendly event will be held on our event field. Therefore, please remember your wellies!” – Taken from the Apley Farm website.

Top tips for Pumpkin Picking:

1. Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable clothes and footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty. Take a pair of gloves. The stems can be prickly.

2. It is a good idea to bring a black bag to put your pumpkins in, for when you’re transporting them home. Saves you having to clean up a muddy car boot.

3. Look for the right pumpkin: When choosing a pumpkin, make sure it’s ripe by checking for a hard exterior and a sturdy stem. Avoid any pumpkins with soft spots, mould, or blemishes.

4. Know your pumpkin’s purpose: Consider what you’ll be using the pumpkins for. If you are carving them, go for the larger pumpkins with a flat bottom for stability. Smaller pumpkins are great for baking and decorating. Mine sometimes like to paint their pumpkin instead of carving.

5. Explore the patch: Don’t just pick the first pumpkin you see (my girls always try to do this). Take your time to explore the whole patch and compare different options. Look for unique shapes, colours, and sizes to find the perfect pumpkin for you. There’s so many interesting coloured pumpkins now. Last year we saw grey ones!

6. Have fun: Pumpkin picking is an enjoyable activity, so make sure to have fun! Bring your family or friends along and make lots of memories.

7. Check for additional activities: Many pumpkin patches offer additional activities like a maize maze, tractor rides, or arts and crafts tents. Take advantage of these fun extras to make your pumpkin picking experience even more memorable.

8. Take photos and tag us in your pictures.

Happy pumpkin picking!
