Last month my eldest daughter Matilda, turned 6 and we were eager to do the party in our new house (we moved in to in February) and we wanted something different that the children could talk about for days (if not weeks) after.
So we contacted the lovely Oneday Theatre and asked if they would do a birthday party for us. And thankfully they agreed. We decided on a Matilda themed party (the famous Roald Dahl story which is also where our daughters name came from as we are avid fans). I asked Oneday Theatre if this theme was possible and I was told yes and other than letting them know how many children were coming, I didn’t need to prepare or do anything else other than the party bags, lunches and party decorations in the house (and move the furniture out of the one room so that the party could be held in there).
We decided on Lunch Box dinners with jam or cheese sandwiches, crisps and a few other bits and pieces.
For the party goody bags we had Matilda pencils with rubbers (these we got from The Book People), some Shakespeare for Children books (we thought this might be a good Theatre party gift – also from The Book People) and I made up some sweetie bags (Home Bargains, Poundland and Asdas sweetie aisles helped here).
Meg, the Artistic Director of Oneday Theatre arrived 15 minutes before the party started to get herself ready. Meg was dressed as Miss Honey which I thought was a lovely touch to the Matilda themed birthday party.
We headed off to collect the children from school, to bring them to our home ready for the party to start. Meg introduced herself to the children, who were all eager to find out what was happening at the party. Meg made them all laugh as she joked and made them feel comfortable in her presence. Meg has this amazing way to make you feel as if you have known her all of your life after just 5 minutes of meeting her.
Once all of the children had entered the room, Meg got them all to stand in a circle and hold hands.
This was a very clever way to make them all stand around the edge of the room, ready to sit down in a circle so everyone was able to see her and she had all of their concentration on her.
Meg played a number of games with the children, ensuring they were laughing, joking, moving around and being suitably entertained.
All of the games were age appropriate and fun. They had chances to act, sing and dance – a perfect theatre combination.
The below photograph is my favourite from the party. You don’t even need to see the faces here to see how much fun they had, the body language is able to tell the story. Just look at them cheering and leaping up in the air.
The children loved acting and Meg was able to keep all of the children entertained and engaged. One young boy who was a little tearful from an aggravated cut elbow a few days previously, still wanted to keep coming back to the party to take part. They all loved it and all joined in. Even Matilda who is quite shy.
Matilda thoroughly enjoyed herself and had a smile on her face all of the way through her party. She said it was the best party she had ever had.
Her favourite part was an acting section where Matilda was Matilda, using her powers to make the children in the room move objects.
Oneday Theatre are doing an introductory price of £99 for a Theatre party for 20 children. Each additional child is £5.
This offer is available for all booked parties by June 1st 2019.
The parties will then move to £149.
Parties last ONE hour and are based around the theme that you give.
Does your child like superheroes? A favourite book? A favourite film? Whatever they like, Meg is able to create a party around that theme with suitable games and entertainment.
