Wand-erfully Funny!
This evening, Mischief Comedy took over the Birmingham Hippodrome stage with their Magic Goes Wrong stage show which was first performed in 2019 at the Quays Theatre, Salford.
Written by Penn Jillette, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Henry Shields and Teller. The story is about a Charity Magic Show that goes disastrously wrong. This production had the whole audience laughing with lots of added moments of shock and wonder. All the wows of a magic show with all the woes of a drama. A fabulous combination.
With a well designed set (great work, Will Bowen), the stage grabbed my whole attention. Bright lights, glitter, colourful scenery, it was a visual heaven.
The acting and magic tricks were super. Sophisticato (Sam Hill) had me laughing before the show even started, when he was in the audience trying to find a dove and caught a woman’s head in a net. Apologising profusely saying he had mistaken her head for a dove. I giggled, a lot. His performance on the stage was strong. Witty and loveable. The audience took a shine to him.
My other favourite was Mind Mangler (Rory Fairbairn) who I could personally watch all evening. His Scottish accent could be listened to for hours and his comical performance had everyone wanting more. I loved his audience interaction and the quickness of making an act fit in with audience responses. In particular the section asking for people’s careers. His on stage comedy with Mickey (Daniel Anthony) was brilliant. A great comedy duo.
Bar (Chloe Tannenbaum) and Spitzmaus/Dance Captain (Jocelyn Prah) are two talented contortionists who bring glamour to the show. I’m still wondering how they performed some of the magic tricks.
That is one of the huge beauties about this show. It isn’t a show where all the magic goes wrong. We actually get to watch some fabulous magic tricks that will leave everyone wondering how did they did that?
Get tickets, it is the perfect ‘pick me up’ and a chance for a huge giggle.
You can watch this at Birmingham Hippodrome until Saturday 29th May 2022. Check out this link for more details and to book tickets: https://www.birminghamhippodrome.com/calendar/magic-goes-wrong/
