Last night, we had the absolute pleasure of seeing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Birmingham Hippodrome, and it was brilliant. One of those nights at the theatre where you leave with a full heart, sore cheeks from smiling, and songs stuck in your head the whole journey home.

There’s something extra special about a show that blends childhood nostalgia with high-energy, laugh-out-loud entertainment. I vividly remember standing in school assembly singing “Any Dream Will Do”, coming home and playing it on my keyboard and to now hear it live, in full technicolour glory, was unexpectedly emotional and it took everything in me, not to sing along. Ha!
This brand-new staging, direct from the London Palladium, is a fresh take on the classic. It’s vibrant, energetic, moving, and brilliantly put together. Even if you think you know Joseph, this version is packed with clever updates and surprises that breathe new life into the story and the addition of Brummie legend Matt Slack as the Pharaoh really worked. Think Vegas Elvis meets panto king, and you’re halfway there. Pharaoh-ciously funny, he had the entire theatre howling, and it was clear the audience adored him.

But the true stars of the show were Christina Bianco who sparkled as the Narrator. A phenomenal voice, amazing energy and a warmth and charm that really worked. And Adam Filipe who played pitch-perfect Joseph. His version of Close the Door gave me goosebumps and hearing the audience roaring with cheers and clapping, I’d guess a lot of people felt exactly the same.

In the traditional show, the children were always backing singers, but not in this new show. They became stars in their own right with proper roles, lines, solos, and stage presence to rival the adults. It was genuinely inspiring to watch.
A huge shoutout must also go to John Rigby, the conductor. Not only did he lead the orchestra (who were amazing) with precision and flair, but his sheer joy, energy and huge smile radiated out into the crowd. He had the audience clapping and swaying along.
The staging, the costumes and the choreography were all perfect.
A 5-star, joy-filled show. Go, go, go book your tickets – you’ll thank me later.
