Captivating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Birmingham Hippodrome have the mesmerising rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” on their stage until April 27th 2024. Think rock, opera, and a whole lot of fun.
Back in July 2022, I watched Ian McIntosh play Galileo Figaro in the 20th Anniversary UK & Ireland Tour of We Will Rock You, and he was phenomenal. I wrote “(Ian) was phenomenal. An amazing energy on the stage. Wherever he was, your eyes were. Keeping the audience in the palm of his hands. Ian has an abundance of talent and was a perfect choice for this role” and my opinion stays for this performance too!
McIntosh embodies the iconic role of Jesus with a blend of strength and vulnerability, his performance is magnetic, drawing the audience into Jesus’s inner turmoil and ultimate sacrifice with each impassioned gesture and haunting note. His performance in Gethsemane with Judas (Shem Omari James) is nothing short of spectacular.
That said, there’s one song that really took my breath away and saw the whole audience enveloped in complete stillness, and that was Louise Francis playing Mary Magdalene singing I Don’t Know How To Love Him. What outstanding vocals.
The soul-stirring ballads, well executed choreography by a talented team and unique telling of the story of the final months of Jesus’s life through the eyes of Judas, make this a show to remember.
Be prepared for flashing lights, visual effects, pyrotechnics, theatrical smoke and haze, some violence, imitation blood and an epic onstage depiction of the crucifixion.
It’s a night to remember.
