What a way to end the year, but with the internationally acclaimed stage sensation, Jersey Boys. It has won 65 major awards and has been seen by over 27 million people worldwide and I was lucky enough to see it this evening at the 120 year gala party and opening night at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, where it continues its tour until January 1st 2022! Yes, that’s right, you could start your year with a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Jersey Boys performance.
The show was thoroughly breath-taking. A stunning performance from a tremendously talented cast, that left me ‘Beggin’ for more.
For those who like me, may have gone to see the show not really knowing anything about it (yes, it’s true. Should I have admitted that?). The show is about 4 young lads from Jersey who have a sound like no other. The radio loves them, the public love them and lets face it, the world loves them. On stage they were a dream but off stage they all had their own stories. Perfect but imperfect lives. Failed marriages, affairs, debts and squabbles. One thing remained though – their enormous talent for music.
The show tells the full story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and we get to hear many of the classic songs that you might not even have realised were created by them. Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Bye Bye Baby and Beggin’ to name a few. We also got to hear some epic solo vocals by Michael Pickering as Frankie Valli in Act One with the beautifully pitched ‘My Mother’s Eyes’ (you can check out his fantastic voice in his band ‘One Trick Pony’ that you can find on Spotify). After the interval, Luke Suri took the role of Frankie Valli and gave phenomenal solos of ‘Can’t Take My Eyes off You’ and ‘Fallen Angel’. I have to admit I am not a fan of change and when it was announced just before the second half commenced that the casting had changed for Frankie, I was a little disappointed. That disappointment lasted for less than 5 minutes as Luke Suri showed us all how brilliant he was and everyone fell in love with him. Especially a row of women on one of the front rows who if I had seen the front of their faces, may have caught them drooling.
The Alexandra Theatre audience loved the show and a very well deserved, standing ovation was given at the end of the performance.
I’m going to bed this evening with a big smile on my face, singing along to a nights worth of classic songs and hearing the magical orchestra that played during the show. What a perfect evening tonight was. I cannot recommend enough that you should get tickets for this show.
