Hill Close Gardens

Posted on 07/03/202207/03/2022

Hill Close Gardens are the hidden hedged gardens of Warwick.

You can see the rare survival of Victorian gardens that were once used by townsfolk living above their business, to escape from the crowded town. After a risk of being demolished they have now been lovingly restored by local volunteers and are now nationally recognised. If you are an RHS member, you can get into the gardens with your membership card. Otherwise it is a small fee to enter. Details can be found on the Hill Close Gardens website.

The gardens have a large emphasis on giving children and families a great experience and have created more recently a childrens sensory garden with a mud kitchen, scarecrow, tunnel and over the summer there will be lots of plants to see, smell and touch.

This really is a section for Children to be mini gardeners. Broom up the leaves, dig for worms, watch the sun shine through the stained glass sections.

Children and families can also explore the other beautiful plots at Hill Close, learn about the stories and history, the flowers and the plants.

They can see the implements that have been used here since Victorian times and find a magical Secret Garden to explore.

Right now you can see the snowdrops and crocuses in season and we can’t wait to go back in the summer and see the sea of colour.

With a wealth of rare flowers and plants an avid gardener would be in plant heaven. You can even purchase some plants that have been propergated here from the rare species.

We had a lovely hour at the gardens, reading about who owned the plots and the history behind them.

Help yourself to a hot drink and a snack in the self serve café. Perfect to sit inside with on a cold day or out on the terrace at the tables.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed taking a look inside all the sheds and outbuildings within the plots. All maintained and looked after so well.

They are open Monday to Friday only during March but from April will be opening weekends too – do check the website here for up to date opening times.

We will be heading back in the summer.

Location: Bread and Meat Cl, Warwick CV34 6HF
