This evening I attended the press night for Guys and Dolls, a BMOS Musicals production at The Alexandra Theatre Birmingham and to say I was blown away was a complete understatement.
Am Dram productions have seen a resurgence recently and they’re bigger, they’re stronger and they’re at a level where they can perform on large popular theatre stages in the City Centres of the UK. BMOS Musical Theatre deserved to be on the Alexandra Theatre Stage this evening.
The performance was strong and professional. If I hadn’t been told it was an Amateur Dramatics group, I wouldn’t have known the difference. The cast on the stage were superb. Talented, spectacular and accomplished.
As I watched them perform, I couldn’t help but want to join the Theatre Group.
Guys and Dolls is a Broadway Fable. Set in Depression-era New York, it tells the story of a couple of big city gamblers and the women who have fallen in love with them. Big winner Sky Masterson (James Gordanifer) falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown (Annabel Pilcher), and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit (Pat Pryce), has been engaged for 14 years to Miss Adelaide (Jo Smith), a big singer at the popular Hot Box Club.
Will they have a happy ever after? What will happen at the mission? And will Nathan Detroit get married? You will have to get tickets to find out.
The lead characters were loveable. James Gordanifer as Sky Masterton was an absolute delight to watch. Charismatic, funny and a voice that gripped the audience. His vocals on ‘Luck be a Lady Tonight’ hit all the right notes.
The onstage chemistry between Sky Masterton and mission worker Sarah Brown was believable. As an audience member I wanted to urge them to get together. They deserve to be together.
Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide were cast perfectly. They really bounced off each other and you couldn’t help but smile when watching.
Jo Smith is hugely talented and her vocals on Take Back Your Mink and Sue Me were superb.
I loved everything about this performance. From the people on the stage (oh yes, Lucy Homer, oozed glamour on the stage in her glittery numbers) to the stage design (the quality was marvellous), the lighting and the choreography.
Everything worked.
I am going to bed this evening incredibly impressed.
