We laughed, we cried, we jumped, and we clapped. Demon Dentist had it all, and you’ll be glad to know that you still have plenty of time to catch it at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre, where it is on the stage until Saturday 1st July, 2023.
Birmingham Stage Show’s adaptation of David Walliams’ novel, Demon Dentist, is yet another marvellous creation. We loved Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy and thoroughly enjoyed this evenings Demon Dentist, which is a funny and quite frankly gripping tale of friendship, courage, and teeth!
Alfie (Sam Varley) and Gabz (Georgia Grant-Anderson) are best friends. Not boyfriend and girlfriend. Just friends. Alfie’s going through a lot at home. His mum passed away when he was a baby – he doesn’t remember her at all, and his dad (James Mitchell) is dying. After years of working down the mines, it’s taken a toll on his lungs. As such, Alfie has managed to miss going to the dentist for 6 whole years and his teeth, well… they need to be seen by a dentist.
It just so happens that a new dentist is in town, the conveniently named Miss Root (Emily Harrigan) and she’s quite a fan of saving teeth, not in the conventional way a dentist usually does.
With a captivating storyline, a talented cast, and superb stage design (Jacqueline Trousdale, you are a design wizard!), this stage production delivers an engaging and fun experience for all members of the audience. I’m not sure who loved it more, me or Matilda!
Emily Harrigan made a brilliant Miss Root, bringing the role to life, with her impeccable acting skills, magnificent vocals, and huge stage presence. Emily captured the essence of a malevolent character consumed by her thirst for teeth. Her performance is thoroughly enjoyable, convincingly portraying the wickedness and deceitfulness of the character and her final song – wow!
Sam Valley shines as Alfie. He effortlessly connects with the audience and becomes everyone’s favourite character. Giving us plenty of moments of humour and also times showing his characters vulnerability, that make you want to give him a big hug.
The supporting cast are great. I am a huge fan of Raj (Zain Abrahams), who is a standout character as the owner of the village shop. Raj is full of comical moments. A charming and engaging character bringing much-needed comic relief amidst some moments of vulnerability and humour within the play. And the same can be said for Winnie (Misha Malcolm), who brings exactly what every child wants to see/hear in a stage show… lots of trumping!! And what every parent can relate to – coffee going straight through you!
We had such a brilliant evening.
A must-see for both fans of the book and anyone new to David Walliams stories.
