Earlier today, I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing ‘Coming to England’ at The Rep Theatre in Birmingham. A stage adaptation of Floella Benjamin’s beloved memoir. Adapted by the renowned David Wood, this production is a vibrant, inspiring, and deeply moving story of hope, determination, and triumph, and you can catch it at The Rep until 22nd February 2025.

Coming to England is a story of strength and perseverance, telling the true story of Floella Benjamin’s journey from Trinidad to England as a young girl, facing the harsh realities of racism in 1960s London. Despite these challenges, Floella’s resilience shines through, guided by her mother’s wisdom and her own unwavering determination.

From the moment the show begins, the energy is infectious. The set and costumes show a stunning blend of bright, vibrant Caribbean hues whilst in Trinidad and then the grey tones of England, symbolising both the warmth of Floella’s homeland and the cold reception she initially faced. The use of music and storytelling intertwines perfectly, drawing the audience into her world with every beat and lyric. The songs are both catchy (Jemima was tapping her foot along to the music) and meaningful, adding an extra layer of emotion to an already powerful narrative. Me and Matilda both had tears in our eyes as Floella said goodbye to her Mother.
The cast delivers outstanding performances, with Julene Robinson portraying young Floella’s spirit perfectly – her optimism, her struggles, and her boundless determination. The chemistry between the cast members adds to the heartwarming nature of the production. You actually believe they are family and are rooting for them all.

This production is an absolute must-see for families with children aged 7 and above. Not only is it engaging and entertaining, but it also provides an important lesson in resilience, kindness, and the power of hope. Children will be inspired by Floella’s story, and adults will find themselves reflecting on themes of belonging, identity, and perseverance.

Grab your tickets, bring the whole family, and prepare to be moved by Floella Benjamin’s incredible journey, that for us, quite frankly gets the full 5 stars! And remember to keep smiling because in the words of Floella Benjamin, “Winners Smile”.
