If you’re looking for an incredible piece of theatre, Come From Away is the show that you MUST see! Yes, the capital letters were very much needed for this 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄! Currently showing at Birmingham Hippodrome until 1st June 2024.
Come From Away captures the moving, yet also uplifting true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the humanity and resilience shown by the small town that embraced them in the aftermath of 9/11.
The musical brilliantly brings to life the heartwarming tales of real people caught in an unprecedented moment in history. From the first female American Airlines captain (Beverley played by Sara Poyzer) to the quick-witted town mayor (Claude played by Nicholas Pound), and the mother of a New York firefighter (Hannah played by Bree Smith), the characters are vividly portrayed with warmth and authenticity. The narrative is a celebration of hope, unity, and the incredible capacity for kindness in times of crisis.
This musical managed to give me goosebumps. There’s a scene where they all are watching the news of 9/11 on a ‘tv’ and a cold chill filled my whole body at that moment. A stark reminder of the moment I myself watched the news as a 17 year old in complete shock.
Although a deeply emotive and heartbreaking moment in history, the soaring music and spirited performances make ‘Come From Away’ a joyous experience that had audiences on their feet with a very much deserved standing ovation. There’s actually moments throughout the performance where roars of laughter fill the theatre, and you see that even in times of adversity, we can often find laughter and hope.
The whole ensemble were utterly brilliant with epic vocals (the dialect coach did a superb job), beautifully detailed choreography and incredible musicians. I’m writing this review the morning after the performance and I’m still sat in complete awe that 14 different people (playing a variety of roles) all did so, so perfectly. I might deem this the most talented theatre cast I have ever seen and with over 100 shows seen, that’s quite something.
Come From Away is everything you could possibly wish for in a musical – and more! Don’t miss your chance to see this phenomenal show at the Birmingham Hippodrome during its run until 1st June 2024 with tickets starting from just £25.
