Cluedo: A New Play

Posted on 03/05/2022

It was Cluedo, in the Alexandra Theatre with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

This evening we headed to see Cluedo and came away smiling from a show that is full of funny moments, silly jokes and a brilliant set design. But what else do you expect when you are seeing a show directed by the talented Mark Ball – the genius behind ‘The Play That Goes Wrong‘.

I was born in the 80s and Cluedo (Clue if you’re American) was one of those games everyone in the 80s and 90s played (and even watched the ITV game show in the 90s) and if you didn’t play it, you at least knew about it. A story of a dinner party where murder happens and the murderer has to be found. Who was it? Where was it? And what murder weapon did they use? The story includes the characters; Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Reverend Green, Professor Plum, Miss Peacock and Mrs White. All these characters are brought to life in this stageshow and I loved it.

I think what made it that little bit more special is that Cluedo the game was originally created in Birmingham by Anthony Pratt, a Birmingham Musician. How nice that this stage show, based on the game, is now in his home town.

I don’t want to give too much away about the show because a) it’s a murder mystery and b) if I tell you it all, you won’t have a reason to go.

But what I can tell you is how fabulous the cast are, how wonderful the stage design is and how much I laughed.

Michelle Collins as Miss Scarlett and Daniel Casey as Professor Plum might be cast as leading characters BUT I have to say, the whole ensemble were superb and they all complimented each other perfectly. My absolute favourite (and the ladies sat behind me) was Jean-Luke Worrell who plays Butler Wadsworth. Worrell has everything a good actor should have. Fabulous stage presence, expressive face, charisma and talent. So much talent. The ladies behind me loved him. I loved him and I think most of the audience loved him.

Mrs Peacock (Judith Amsenga) also deserves an individual shout out for continually making me giggle through the show.

The stage design was something else. So simple and yet so intrinsically created. David Farley the designer deserves great recognition for this creation. How do you create 7 rooms in one set and make it work so ingeniously? Wizard at work!

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. A night of slapstick comedy and a murder mystery. It was like a live Netflix show.

Showing until 7th May 2022. Book your tickets here: Cluedo Tickets
