On Sunday 30th April we headed to our first ever Circus Funtasia show, held in Aldridge. A circus founded by Julio Nikolov and Tracey Jones in January 2013.
We pulled up in the car and the girls got excited the moment they saw the Big Top. We have been to a couple of circuses over the last 6 months, so they know what to expect and are eager to get inside (although we definitely got more than we expected at this circus).
When we entered the Big Top we were shown to our Ringside seats by a smartly dressed gentleman, walking by the fresh popcorn and candy floss stand which filled the air with a sweet aroma and by the bar/hot dog stand which added a smokey feel to the air. The Big Top was heated, which was an added bonus.
All of the staff were incredibly friendly and it helped make the experience that little more special.
I popped and grabbed the girls some popcorn (£3) and a slush drink (£3) and we then waited for the show to start.
Emilion made his first appearance as the modern clown, a stereotypical ‘geek’ style character that made the audience (especially my girls) laugh out loud. He joined the acts together and kept the feel of comedy within the show. Great for ensuring the children kept entertained and interested in the show.
My husband particularly enjoyed the part of the show where Emilion used a container to make smoke hoops in the air, blowing a cup off an audience members head.
The whole show was fantastic. Modern, fast, energetic and often leaving you on the edge of your seat.
My favourite part was the Globe Riders (Vesco, Malin and Ivan) who ride motorcycles inside a metal sphere on the stage. The staff kindly gave the girls some ear defenders to wear whilst watching this. I was on the edge of my seat watching three motorcycles inside the sphere but right at the end a fourth bike came onto the stage and went inside too. One tiny mistake and I would dread to think what would happen. Such skill shown by all four of the acts (I’m unsure who the 4th bike rider was, but he was amazing). I’m still sat in amazement at the act nearly 24 hours later. Just look at the picture below… Four bikes inside there, riding around at exactly the same time at speeds of about 40mph.
My second favourite act was the Wheel of Death. I’ve seen this at a few of the shows now and I thought I couldn’t come away any more amazed at the Wheel of Death as I have been before. But…. Nikolay and Ivan from Bulgaria outshone all the previous Wheel of Deaths me and my husband have seen. We were both impressed by the skill, balance and strength they both showed. 11 meters high up in the air, leaping high off the apparatus at the very top. Absolutely amazing to watch.
My husband really enjoyed the fire act by Antonio which featured fire breathing and whip cracking. I have to admit here that at one point I actually jumped off of my seat. Yep. Me. Not the children, they didn’t flinch, just me. Ha.
It was an act which kept you watching, mesmerised, unable to take your eye off the act. You could feel the heat from the fire in our Ringside seats which added to the effect.
Other acts included Nia who has an amazing juggling ability whilst riding a segway and dressed as one of her favourite characters, Harley Quinn. Nia is amazing and it is almost impossible to believe she is only 14 years old, but she is.
Other stand out acts include Attila from Hungary who demonstrated his upper body strength doing hand balancing. I can’t even do a hand stand on the floor, leaning up against a wall. This man can do one, on top of two plates, raised in the air.
This show has so many fantastic acts. Elodie, Lucy-Louise and Felicia completed various gymnastic and aerial artist style acts, including the tight rope, hula hoop, swinging trapeze and twists.
The three of them were fantastic, showing extreme strength, balance and skills in their acts.
We all really enjoyed the show. The majority of the time I’d look over at my husband and the girls and they would be sat mesmerised at the stage.
You know you’ve got a great show when every family member enjoys it. And we all did.
Looking around the audience there were lots of happy faces and when we left the show we heard people commenting how fantastic the show was. It was especially nice to see the audience participation. The circus really included the audience. Even a section where four audience members had to come on stage and act out a film scene. One man had to carry a movie clapper board and seemed to really get into his role, so I had to take a picture as he was making me and the audience laugh. I hope he gets to see this as I heard him on his way out mentioning that he had a moment of fame on stage – and now he has a moment of fame forever on the Internet too 🙂
The show is now off to Darlaston and starts from May 2nd until May 8th. If you book in advance you can get early bird ticket prices and if you book for the opening night, all tickets are £7. A bargain. Check out @Circusfuntasia on Facebook and @circus_funtasia on instagram for more details.
The show lasts for two hours (including the 15 minute interval) and it is advised to bring some cash with you as you can purchase beer, soft drinks, burgers, hot dogs, face painting, popcorn, candy floss and other bits and pieces.
You really don’t want to miss this family friendly circus. It’s a perfect afternoon out that will leave you all talking about it for days.
