Book Review: Baby’s First Bank Heist by Jim Whalley

Posted on 01/08/201801/08/2018

Although the Smallhousebigtrips family is often out and about, hiding from our tiny house and exploring what the world has to offer, we do still have days inside the house and every day is filled with reading books.

Our latest read is Baby’s First Bank Heist (and we may now be on the 15th read of this book. Yes 15th!), a Bloomsbury Children’s Book, written by Jim Whalley.

This book is fantastic. It comes in paperback for £6.99 which is the copy we have. Or you can get it in hardback for £11.99 or ebook for £6.99. We really like our paperback copy, it’s approx A4 in size (just a bit wider) and is colourful and the illustrations by Stephen Collins (Cartoonist from the Guardian Weekend magazine) are well presented and eye catching. It is just the right length for our two girls aged 2 and 5 too.

Matilda and Jemima both really enjoy sitting down to read it, looking at the pictures and laughing at Baby Frank. Even whilst I sit and write this review, the girls have run to get the copy out of our cupboard, to look through it again. Just look at the girls faces in the picture below, after the first time I read the story to them.

So what’s the book about? Well, if you hadn’t guessed from the title, Frank robs a bank. Forget Bonnie and Clyde or Jesse James, Frank is the new criminal mastermind. He is unhappy that his parents won’t let him have a pet, but he REALLY wants one, so he decides to rob a bank to get the money to buy one. But will he get one? Well, you’ll have to read it to find out. Where’s the fun if I tell you the ending?

The girls absolutely love this book and as a family we are looking forward to seeing more of Jim Whalleys work, as this was his debut book. It’s fantastic and I can see Jim going far. Soon he will have a full section in Waterstones. Just watch this space!

Disclaimer: Bloomsbury Children’s Books kindly sent us a copy to read in return for a review. I honestly do not think I needed to write anything as the pictures of the girls happy faces, give you all the review you could possibly need – they think the books ace. We do too. Highly recommend you purchasing a copy.
