Location: Merrions Wood, Birmingham Road, Great Barr, Birmingham
On Wednesday morning, me and Jemima decided to go on a Bluebell hunt. We ended up walking to our local nature reserve, Merrions Wood.
Merrions Wood is around 12 hectares in size and is a haven for a variety of wildlife including;
- Oak and Beech woodland
- Grasslands
- Ponds
- Hedgerows
- Birds
- Bats
- Bees and wasps
- Saproxylic invertebrates
- Fungi
And the reason that we attended…
- To see the carpets of Bluebells covering the woodland floor
Having researched the woodland online, I’ve come to discover that it was part of a former deer park and part of the entrance to Great Barr Hall (which is no longer in use).
The Beacon Way, a 40km long distance footpath passes through the site.
There’s no toilets near the nature reserve and the only noise you hear when inside is the sound of the birds tweeting and squirrels jumping from tree to tree. It is such a pleasant place to go for a quiet peaceful walk.
There’s quaint little bridges to cross if you want to explore off track.
Jemima really enjoyed looking at all of the different trees and the bluebells. She refused to get out of the pram as the floor was muddy, but we hope to return again soon, when it hasn’t been raining lots.
So, if you are local and looking for somewhere to see some bluebells, Merrions Wood comes with great recommendations from me and Jemima.
