Location: Holly Wood Nature Reserve, off Whitecrest, B43 6EL
This afternoon we headed out for a walk through another local bluebell wood. Earlier in the year I completed a photography course with David Rann and ever since I’m constantly looking for places I can get my camera out and practice, a Bluebell Wood was today’s aim. Since taking up photography, I have learnt it is incredibly hard to practice taking pictures, with children. They move, don’t pose and if they do pose, they pull the weirdest forced smile that almost looks like a gremlin is about to jump out. I’ve found that the best photos are often the unstaged pictures, the natural ones.
We headed off to Holly Wood Nature Reserve, through the beautiful gate and the girls looked at the map of the nature reserve.
As soon as you enter the woods, the carpets of Bluebells enter your view.
The nature reserve is quite bumpy and wouldn’t be good for a wheelchair as it was quite tough to push the pushchair through. There’s also a lot of stinging nettles in this nature reserve, so if you go with children likely to not listen to advice of staying on the paths, they may get stung. Ours somehow managed to avoid it.
There are some parts where you can go off track (without being stung). The girls found a little camp fire hidden at the back. They had some hugs when they found it.
It is a lovely little nature walk with a stream running through the area. It’s not worth a long trip out, but if you don’t live too far away and would like to see some carpets of Bluebells, then this wood is for you.
