Beyond Van Gogh, Birmingham

Posted on 01/08/202401/08/2024

Taking up residency in Hall 11 at The NEC Birmingham is the immersive ‘Beyond Van Gogh’.

An incredibly beautiful journey: Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience – produced by Annerin Productions and Paquin Entertainment Group – blends over 300 of Van Gogh’s masterpieces with cutting-edge technology and a curated soundtrack, bringing the iconic artist’s story to life and is available until 1st September 2024.

When you arrive, you walk through a gallery of the history of Van Gogh. Painting a written picture of the story behind some of the world’s most incredible paintings.

Having struggled with mental illness and poverty throughout his life, Vincent Van Gogh used his intense emotions to create masterpieces. He spent his last years in a mental hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and ultimately died from a gunshot wound on July 29, 1890, at the age of 37. There’s some of his profound quotes within the gallery. The type of quotes that make you stop and think.

You then enter into a small room (approx 5m x 5m) to see a projection on the wall and ceiling and then make your way to the main room.

An incredibly large room filled with walls of Van Goghs work. Bold, expressive brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and emotional intensity. His use of thick, swirling impasto techniques adding texture and movement to his work, creating a sense of dynamism. Van Gogh’s unique approach often captured the emotional essence of his subjects, ranging from landscapes and still lifes to portraits and self-portraits. His innovative use of colour and form has made his style easily recognisable and highly influential in the post-Impressionist movement and here, his art-work is brought to life right before your very eyes.

You can stand and walk around, sit on one of the available chairs or even take a space on the floor.

It is a magnificent experience, and although (in my opinion) quite expensive for an hours experience, it’s so worth it.

Go alone or go with friends and family. It’s the experience where you’ll forget who you’ve come with, as you get so immersed with the breathtaking art before your very eyes.

Feel a part of the artwork. And don’t forget to check out the shop after.
