You don’t need a magic lamp – this musical is the real wish-granter!
Tonight was the Birmingham Hippodrome press night for Aladdin and it was everything we had hoped it to be. Catchy tunes, sparkly outfits, the magic every Disney stage show has, and lots of giggles.
This production brings the beloved Disney classic to life with a cast that shines brighter than a magic lamp. Gavin Adams as Aladdin captures the mischievous charm of the street rat-turned-prince, while Yeukayi Ushe steals the show as the larger-than-life Genie. Ushe’s infectious energy and humour had the audience giggling away – his performance of “Friend Like Me” was a standout, packed with song excerpts that brought a modern twist to the magic. Without a doubt, the Genie was our favourite character of the night! So much so, that Jemima was adamant she HAD to have the Genie bear that was on sale at the merchandise stand.
The rest of the cast brought their own magic too. Desmonda Cathabel’s Jasmine was poised and powerful with a loveable flair to her, while Adam Strong’s Jafar was every bit as menacing and manipulative as fans of the film remember. Special mention goes to Angelo Paragoso as Iago, who had me and Matilda chuckling away a lot.
Nelson Bettencourt, Adam Taylor, and Nay-Nay as Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, provided plenty of laughs and energy throughout. I was really impressed with their performances in “Somebody’s Got Your Back”.
Musically, the show sparkles with Alan Menken’s unforgettable score, featuring favourites like “A Whole New World” and “Prince Ali”, alongside catchy numbers like “Somebody’s Got Your Back”, which brought lighthearted humour to the night. The orchestra, under the baton of conductor Dave Rose, delivered each number with precision and flair, ensured we felt the magic of the show from start to finish.
But it’s not just the individual cast performances that stand out – Aladdin is so much more – a visual feast. Bob Crowley’s scenic design, from the bustling streets of Agrabah to the glittering Cave of Wonders, is truly spectacular, while Gregg Barnes’ costumes (including plenty of sparkles and my gosh did I like the sparkles) bring vibrant colour and character to every scene. Make sure to explore the theatre, where Barnes’ Aladdin artwork is on display, adding to the magical atmosphere of the evening. Jemima was so excited to see them and have her photo taken next to them.
The special effects and Jim Steinmeyer’s illusions were awe-inspiring – expect a few surprises that will leave you wondering, “How did they do that?” and if you find out, please do come and tell me as I’m still unsure.
There’s no shortage of laughs within this version of Aladdin, with plenty of fun and timely jokes (like “strictly cave dancing”) that had the audience giggling throughout.
Running until 3rd November, this production of Aladdin is an absolute must-see, making it the perfect half-term treat for families. Whether you’re there for the nostalgia or the spectacle, this magical musical is guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages. Don’t miss your chance to be swept off your feet on a magic carpet ride through Agrabah!
