On Sunday we headed over to Park Regis Hotel for a Sunday Carvery at the 1565 Restaurant, Bar and Open Terrace.

We had been to the restaurant a year ago when my husband treated me to an afternoon tea and we were impressed then, so we were very excited to be coming back for a Sunday Carvery (one of our favourite meals as a family).

We arrived a little earlier than our 1pm slot, so after admiring the interior with the girls posing on the chairs, we then headed off to the terrace to look out over Birmingham.

We were pleasantly surprised with the beach on the terrace. The girls wanted to jump on it but I knew I’d never get them to leave to have our meal, so they admired from a distance (on this occasion). As a quirky extra, you can borrow flip flops to sit on the ‘beach’ with.

After relaxing on the terrace for a bit, we headed over to the reception area of the restaurant and were seated at our table and shown around the buffet area.

We asked for high chairs as our youngest gets a little too tempted to go wandering if not strapped in. And our eldest is a little dot, so needs a higher seat to be able to eat from the table. The high chairs came over quickly and we all went off to get our first course from the starter section.

We all decided on some of the freshly baked bread rolls. They were baked just right. Nice and soft inside with a crunch on the outside.

Me and Mr Trips had our bread roll with the Soup of the Day: fresh chunky tomato soup which was delicious. It had a peppery kick to it which was perfect. A nice addition to the sweet tomato taste.

The girls chose items from the salad cart. At first I thought it was unusual to have a salad cart as part of the Sunday Carvery but with children it is a much appreciated and welcome addition to the buffet selection. The salad was fresh, varied and tempting. I do have to admit I tried a bit of the pasta off my daughters plate and it was really nice.

The girls really enjoyed being able to have a bit of a few different items.

We ordered drinks from an extensive drinks menu. I have to admit there were about 10 different drinks that I was umming and ahhing between.

In the end I decided to have an apple mojito which was delicious (and alcoholic free as I was driving).

Matilda and Jemima both had apple juice and Mr Trips had a Wild Cherry cocktail (Tullamore Dew, Martel VS, Baileys, Luxardo, Cinzano and Cherry Bitter), but he wasn’t too keen and I have to note here that the restaurant took the cocktail back and changed it for him (for no extra charge) . I think that’s another sign of great service.

After we finished our starters, we headed over to the mains, where we were greeted by a polite and attentive server who talked us through the options.

You could choose between Roast Turkey, Roast Beef or the special of the day, Roast Gammon. For vegetarians there was a Sweet Chilli Gnocchi. There were Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, sage, apricot and onion stuffing, rosemary roasted potatoes and a large variety of vegetables, gravy and accompaniments.

We all helped ourselves to our mains and sat down to enjoy them.

Our waiter Ozkan was fantastic. Popping back to see how we were getting on and if we would like to have anything else. Really accommodating with the children, checking if they needed anything or wanted more of anything.

We all really enjoyed the food that we had. My favourites were the large choice of vegetables and the very tasty rosemary roast potatoes.

Matildas favourite were the potatoes and the Yorkshire pudding.

Jemimas favourite were the pigs in blankets and vegetables.

And Mr Trips loved the meat and potatoes.

We were all impressed and our only complaint was that the stuffing was slightly overdone. But that’s a small issue and definitely not a reason to avoid this great Sunday Carvery deal.

Matilda and Jemima both gave the traditional main course carvery the thumbs up (or fingers in Jemimas case as she hasn’t mastered the thumbs).

And me and Mr Trips were impressed too.

After we had all finished our meals we asked to browse the dessert menu.

There’s a selection of desserts inclusive of your three course price, or you can pay a bit extra to enjoy a hot dessert.

We decided to stay with the desserts that were a part of the £14.95 offer.

I had the Gateaux of the day which was Black Forest. It was nice but incredibly filling, so I gave the last third to Mr Trips to enjoy.

Mr Trips chose the Dark Chocolate and Orange Mousse, which I did lean over to try and it was delicious. The perfect mix of dark chocolate and orange. And I wish it came in a bigger portion so I could have stolen some more. Even writing about it now and looking at the picture is making me want some more.

The girls had a bowl of mixed fruit and some fresh cream profiteroles and shared them together.

By the time we all finished our desserts we were very full and couldn’t fit anything else in. Not even a drink at the end.

With that, we thanked Ozkan our waiter and headed off home. Happy, full and very content.

We really recommend this restaurant both for families and for couples. The setting is lovely and you get treated like royalty without having the usual 4* price tag attached.

Actually looking at our last Toby Carvery receipt for the four of us, our bill at 1565 Restaurant is cheaper and we had more courses and fabulous service.

1565 you have some new fans who will be back again very soon.
