101 Dalmatians

Posted on 02/07/202402/07/2024

Dodie Smith’s beloved tail-wagging adventure, 101 Dalmatians, comes to life on stage with paws-itively spectacular puppetry, fetching choreography, witty tunes, and an irresistible puppy (can I take him home?!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There’s some very excellent elements to the show, the superb puppetry by Jimmy Grimes is just phenomenal. Eye-catching and really enjoyable to watch. The set design (David Woodhead) is cleverly created to change frequently but seamlessly, and the use of lighting (James Whiteside) is rather wonderful. There’s a section within the show with lots of puppet dogs and the way the lighting kind of made them appear out of nowhere, was brilliant.

Jessie Elland plays the role of Danielle perfectly and was my favourite character. There’s some dialogue towards the start of the show between Danielle and Cruella De Vil (Kym Marsh) which had me giggling away. I did write what it was but whilst proof-reading have decided it’s best not to reveal too much.

Cruella De Vil is a force to be reckoned with. Her cackling evil laugh and petrifying stage presence has you scared and giggling in equal measures. There’s some excellent acting by Kym and it’s lovely to see her on the stage.

I have to admit although the age guidance is 5 plus for this show, I’d say it’s more for older children and adults. The sound is quite loud (in my opinion) and there’s a few bits that are more suited to older children..

This is a new musical (written by Douglas Hodge) and the songs have some really catchy moments and witty lyrics, causing laughter across the theatre.

Give the show a try and let me know what you think. It is playing at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham until Saturday 6th July 2024 with tickets starting from just £13.

You can also catch the show at Leicester Curve from 23rd – 27th July and Wolverhampton Grand from 20th – 24th August, with Faye Tozer playing Cruella.

And don’t forget to get your merchandise! Including the cutest dalmatian plush dogs.
